Gabriel Embeha creates, for imagoRevolution, the artwork Beyond Masks in the Sun (Absorbing an Idaho Militia), 2018. This is how the artist explains his work: “images of members of radical right militias holding guns have become widespread. My work as a whole shows the problems with confronting such images, especially in political discourse. Instead of engaging images of such persons, places, things and ideas with other opinions meant to counter them, this image shows my practice of absorbing them into more fruitful ethnographic/anthropological, aesthetic and political ways of seeing.”
Gabriel Embeha, Beyond Masks in the Sun (Absorbing an Idaho Militia), mixed media, 150×200 cm, 2018
Through a continual, mixed media interweaving of acrylic, graphite, digital imagery, performance, film, and writing Gabriel Embeha engages a diverse range of persons, places, things and ideas involved in different forms of disability and violence. His process involves an ongoing series of interrelated sacrificial acts and quasi-ethnographic confrontations with scientific representation, the state, conscience, and futility. He lives and works in Berlin.
